All living beings need food to survive and some mechanisms to
protect themselves, call it a shelter, sharp teeth and nails or skins that
change colour. Human beings have superior intelligence to all other living beings.
They need to know. They need to know, what they need to know. They need to
know, why they need to know. They need to know, how they need to know.
Many people that were deeply settled in compassion to relieve
others of their pain developed an insatiable urge to know the truth of the
things. They made utmost sacrifices to explore the true knowledge and to
sustain that knowledge, acquired the impeccable and strong character dedicated
to the truth. Such people tried to simplify the process of knowing for others,
the ordinary human beings. They made the process of knowing so simple that one
could learn what was there to be learned from the experiences of his day to day
life. They tried to imbibe the fine elements of true knowledge into the duties
of the mankind for their own survival as well as for helping others in their
survival. Such people tried that the ordinary man gets emotionally overwhelmed
with the state of deep satisfaction in working dutifully with others for the
survival of the all that live in this world. In case of all living beings other
than human beings, their collective efforts for survival of all are according
to the natural law. Any living being other than human being draws from the
nature only that much as is needed by it for its own survival. This law of
nature comes to them instinctively.
The human being is comparatively freer to let his decisive
intellect prevail. He can try to
understand the natural laws and can even err in doing it. He can understand
them with the best of his abilities and intentions; and then, he can honour
them or disregard them. As a consequence thereof the man may have to pay the
price for his errors, and suffers. Why we, the human beings, in particular,
have been made to bear the additional burden of making mistakes and suffer is
not well known to us. But, one thing is sure; apart from the need to survive
the man does have an additional and pressing minimum need to know how must he
think and conduct himself to minimize his suffering. Some scriptures indicate that by knowing the
truth of the things and conducting himself in a truthful manner the man can
achieve freedom from the need of keeping his body and soul together. We are not
competent to prove or disprove this suggestion. We can only say that need to
know is as important as that of the need to survive. Whether we learn by
experiencing or by simply trusting the words of the people, who passed on the
simplified knowledge after having acquired it for the generations to come, depend
on us.
If and when we can make errors in knowing what is there to be
known, we can rectify our errors. But, when we knowingly or unknowingly do not
rectify our errors, or do not learn to view things they must be viewed; we will
harm the nature and as a consequence thereof, ourselves also. If the damage is
not severe, the nature may repair it, but if the nature finds it to be
irreparable, it may deem it fit to renew it completely by destroying the
damaged part of the universe we live in; that also we need to know.
