“It is not easy to survive with reasonable comfort in this
world. One has to prepare himself for it.” This is the main frequency to which
each young intellect is tuned to. There are thousands and thousands of thoughts
that occur to a young child. He also expresses them with his words and conduct,
but the elders often don’t take any notice of them viewing them as much of the
childish efforts made by a child during his learning process. Only those
thoughts that are consistent with the key thought of successful and comfortable
survival are allowed to be processed further or encouraged.
When one is trained to drive a car, he is taught to start,
slowly accelerate, and then to slow down using the brakes. Other things like
taking a turn, using indicators, being watchful of surrounding traffic and
blowing horns etc. are taught later. We do not teach a child how to regulate
the speed of his survival efforts. If and when a child experiences trouble in
his efforts for survival, we are ever ready to offer more tips about how to
survive and succeed without even thinking if he needs to slow down and look at
other things that also are as essential as mere survival.
In ancient Indian philosophy, one’s thoughts and conduct
dedicated to his physical survival is called Pravritti, and his
thoughts and conduct dedicated to moving away from mere physical survival and
trying to understand more about the meaning and purpose of life and dealing
with it is called Nivritti. The ancient Indian philosophy gives
equal importance to both. It is like learning to know how to accelerate and smoothly
slow down or stop to avoid accidents and damage.
The thought that one can lead a happy life always remaining attached
to Pravritti is an illusion of thought. Being only that much
concerned about one’s own physical welfare as is necessary is giving much needed
space to Nivritti in one’s life. This is also
surrendering all that is not actually needed by us for the use of other’s for
their survival. This is working for building an environment for our physical safety
and mental peace in a sustained manner. One cannot ensure physical security and
mental balance in an agitated and hostile environment. The essence of all the religions
is giving enough importance and leaving necessary space and opportunities to
all that exists around us for its happy survival as one wants for himself.
The concept of inventing newer methods for multiplying and
fortifying our physical possessions is flawed. It may work with several
constrains and limitations in a few circumstances, in some places for a short
time. An intellect that is tuned to Pravritti suffers from severe
delusions and can never make the man contended and happy. No proof is necessary
for this. Anyone can verify it himself with
his own experience. Till the time one is not able to convince himself about his
intellectual delusions he keeps on avoiding looking at the writing on the walls
that surround him, and he stays submerged deep into the sea of wishful
thinking.
