Happiness and sorrow may depend on the
circumstances, one has to undergo. Sometimes one can change the circumstances
that cause pain, but that may not always be possible. Still, the man tries to
make his circumstances favorable to him; and, he is free to do it.
The
unhappiness caused by interplay of human pride, prejudices and one’s lack of
willingness to change is disastrous. It creates an all pervading mental field
that makes us unhappy in an irreversible way as no change in our circumstances
can reduce the extent of our sorrow.
Although
our mind and intellect are as physical as our body, desires and ego; but they
have superior abilities to regulate their own processes. Supported by human
efforts they can align their processes with the laws of nature that maintain
and sustain life in the universe. Our pride, prejudices and unwillingness to
change in the right direction, that is, towards the universal laws of nature,
have inertial properties, the properties of stagnation, decay and death.
Unhappiness
caused by adverse circumstances is trivial disturbances in our life that are
associated with our efforts for survival. We can reduce it sometimes, but cannot
eliminate it altogether. It is strange that we waste a lot of our valuable
energy in trying to become a perfectionist in the matters of reducing our pains
caused by our circumstances; and leave the most devastating causes of our
sorrow, that are, our pride, our prejudices and us being unwillingness to
change in the right direction.
