Spirit of inquiry is at the root of Science of
Spirituality. The scientific attitude and temperament have to be a full scale expression
of the Spirit of Inquiry. Those with the scientific temperament, keep all the
avenues to knowledge open to them. They do not hesitate in staying with a particular
piece of knowledge gained a little longer; they call this sojourn as having ‘faith’
in something. The faith is not beyond the spirit of inquiry; in fact, it
facilitates the scientific attitude.
In
absence of faith, one doubts. The doubt blocks many avenues to knowledge, and
hence, is a big obstacle in acquiring a scientific attitude. For example, faith
in the God, in our life’s sojourn offers to us a much needed perspective about
what may be beyond our material existence and still, may provide orderliness to
our material existence. Faith in God may be very consistent with the spirit of
inquiry and the scientific knowledge. The important thing, however, is that one’s
faith must be under his control, lest it becomes a superstition.
