The most important aspect of spirituality is
complete absence of all kinds of discrimination, differentiation and
distinction. The concept of spirituality stipulates that there must not be any
difference between the Divine laws and the laws framed by man to regulate his
thoughts and conduct, between the essences of one religion from that of the
other, from the duties and rights of one human being from that of the other and
so on and so forth.
Over
the years the man has deviated much from the thought of oneness of the whole. We
build castles in the air of oneness, equality, equity and integrity on the
foundation of discrimination. The root cause of human suffering, whether
physical, social, mental or spiritual, is man’s habit of discriminating things.
He acquires it even before he learns to stand on his feet. Even the awareness
about his inevitable death and the temporariness of all his possessions does
not deter the man from discriminating himself from others in all possible ways.
The
modern man who is thoroughly accustomed of conducting himself for his own
physical benefit relying much on his intellect, which is tuned to the material
aspects of the world, can perhaps, change himself if he commits himself to act against
the thought of discrimination. Maybe, he can pick up any aspect of individual
or social life where he feels that discrimination is more pronounced than many
other aspects, and, dedicate himself to work against it using all what he
possesses or has under his control. The discrimination could be economic;
religious; of caste, creed or gender; of social status or education. However,
there are three conditions for it. The first condition is that he must commit
himself according to his abilities and limitations. Secondly, he must work selflessly for the
task chosen by him without any desire of award or reward. Last, but the most
important one is that once he has started he must not leave the job in between,
irrespective of any opposition, distraction and hardships that he may encounter
in the process of his action.
Further,
it is not difficult to realize that any action acquires extraordinary
effectiveness if there is no difference in thoughts, conduct and words of the
one who acts. The beauty of an action is not that much in achievement of its
desired outcome, but in its perfect harmlessness, the purity of thoughts behind
it as well as the consistency of all activities and expressions with such
thoughts. No one can predict to what extent we can eradicate the thought of
discrimination and distinction from our lives just as one cannot predict and
estimate about numerous ever changing factors and influences that generate it.
The only thing that can be predicted with certainty is that such efforts would
not be wasted. The right thoughts would be strengthened to influence others,
the right actions would appear to serve as example for others and right words
would float to create the right impact. But, above all, the one who acts
selflessly as above to work against discrimination would emerge as the biggest
beneficiary. In his efforts to fight against discrimination he would have
learned and acquired many such qualities that were not previously known to him;
the qualities of compassion and contentment to enrich his life with rare satisfaction
and peace. The one who makes such efforts would emerge as a useful entity to
add quality to human life and minimize human suffering.
