Why we consider that the scriptures provide the
perfect guidelines to decide how we must think and conduct? It is because the
scriptures are believed to have been revealed by the selfless people who had
nothing else in mind other than the benefit of the man. The scriptures have
been revealed after considerable observation of human life, traditional cycles
of nature and man’s surroundings, and, contemplation over how the man thinks
and conducts for his survival; what pleases and tempts him; what he dislikes
and cannot be made to do; to what extent he can bear and make sacrifices; what
are his strengths and weaknesses and all possible things that can influence
human life. While the scriptures give enough freedom to human beings for their
needs, they also restrain him in fulfilling their desires that may cause harm
to the human race or cause disturbance in tradition cycles of nature.
While
the authors of the scriptures trusted their own impartiality and sense of
justice; and also the keenness, abilities and fairness of those who were
expected to interpret the intent and contents of the scriptures for the benefit
of man as well as of those who had to assume the responsibility to regulate the
conduct of people; they knew it very well that to err is human. It was for this
reason that the scriptures permitted the future generations to make appropriate
modifications in the provisions of the scriptures according to the space, time
and circumstances. However, the scriptures never allowed any dilution in the
intent of the scriptures, that is, benefit (physical, spiritual and
intellectual) of all without any discrimination whatsoever.
Although
we are more or less aware of the performance of politicians, the religious
leaders and educators of yesterday as well as those of today, we have hardy made
enough attempts of knowing as to how the intent of knowledge contained in
scriptures that were revealed in the distant past has been communicated to the future
generations and how the human conduct has been regulated to benefit all without
discrimination. It seems that the scriptures have now been placed on bookshelves
marked as ‘Religion’; and, different religions have created their own
traditional ritualistic identities to serve the interests of their leaders
instead of seeding such thoughts in the human minds that were for the benefit of
humanity. The net outcome is that the modern man seems to have accepted to be
ruled by those politicians and taught by those educators who have little
understanding about what is beneficial for the mankind.
Is
it not the time to rectify this error?
