Notwithstanding one’s high
status, one is vulnerable to fall if he thinks he is inferior to anyone in some
respect. All of us are good at a few things and hopeless in many others. Here
the word ‘fall’ has all types of connotations. It may mean decline in a worldly
sense, emotional disturbance or spiritual fall.
How can we get away from the
duality of inferiority and superiority? Even when we are able to detach
ourselves from the mundane issues of life, we keep on reacting to thoughts and
deeds that help us advance spiritually, and those that are hindrances. No
doubt, once one has detached himself from the worldly issues, he normally
compares himself with himself, not with others; but, the pains of failure and
downfall do disturb him.
Maybe, the thought that there
exists only one type of being, only one type of feeling and only one type of
intelligence; does away with plurality of what are inferior and what are
superior. Is it not the concept of Advait, the only and perfect oneness,
of the Brahma, not even its expression?
But, that does not help the
ordinary mortals like us, in doing away with the thought of inferiority and
superiority. If we can prevent ourselves from keeping our worldly self at the center
of our life, perhaps we would be able to move away from the duality of inferiority
and superiority. In that case, someone else who also does not keep his worldly
self at the center of his life can be viewed as one exactly like you, neither
superior, nor inferior. And, all those who keep their worldly selves at the
center of their lives will not matter to us for any kind of comparison. Away
from the worries of a probable fall, we will then, become sufficiently free to make
our respective journeys of life more meaningful than ever.
